Pulpits

Priests used to deliver their sermons from a pulpit, which was usually located on either side of the nave near the corner of the transept and main hall. It was built high and reached through a flight of stairs. To ensure that the priest’s message is heard throughout the church, his voice is magnified by the tornavoz, a sounding board that looks like a dome or turret placed above the pulpit.

Churches in Argao and Boljoon have well-preserved pulpits. In Argao, the wooden pulpit is decorated with carvings in pineapple motif. Also intact is its ornate tornavoz.
